Davadur presents Future Folk #5

Davadur and the Future Folk series present a special collaboration between the unique Cretan musician Yiangos Hairetis and the electroacoustic composer Tasos Stamos. A continuation of a series of concerts that explore musical geographies from the Southeastern Mediterranean, in which the extremes between the archaic and the ultramodern coexist harmoniously yet intensely, this musical ritual project will delve into the deepest roots of the musical tradition of the island of Crete with the instruments and voice of Hairetis, through a prism of the futuristic sonic universe of Stamos' electroacoustic soundscapes.

Musique Con Crete will be a live representation of the album of the same name (Discrepant 2018, UK) which created an impression in the fields of contemporary exploratory music, mainly for the way it involves traditional and contemporary elements but also for the creative study of the sources of Cretan musical expression, as a catalyst that deconstructs the traditional form into a post-technological hybrid that may even succeed in transferring to the future the essence of a particular folk tradition.

Giagkos Cheretis

Yiagkos Cheretis was born and raised in Anogia, Crete. He is a musician and composer, playing the Cretan lute, mandolin and lyra as his main instruments, and is also active in singing. His work is in the field of modern creative processing of tradition, combining elements of Cretan music with experimental and contemporary sound forms. In 2012, he participated, together with Psarogiorgis, Yiannis Angelakas and Nikos Veliotis, in the album “As long as the wind blows”. Then, in collaboration with Maria-Christina Harper, they created the Hairetis – Harper project, a unique musical ensemble that combines the lute with the harp, and released the album “Draft”. In 2023, together with Coti K. and Tsiko, they released the album “Riziko Fantasiako”, a work that moves between tradition, improvisation and modern electronic aesthetics.

He has participated in numerous appearances and concerts in Greece and abroad, collaborating with important artists and bands such as Psarantonis, Giannis Aggelakas & Visitors, Social Waste, Babis Papadopoulos, Last Drive, Alex K., Dimitris Poulikakos, Nikos Spyropoulos, Magic de Spell, Chainis Apostolakis, Psarogiorgis, Nikiforos Aerakis, Vasilis Skoulas, Michalis Kallergis, Lambis Xylouris, Zacharias Spyridakis, among others. His music for the documentary “The Trace of Time” has been awarded at The Archaeology Channel International Film Festival in the United States. At the same time, he has composed the music and participated on stage as a musician in the theatrical performance "Homer's Iliad: Plague (epidemic) & Menis (wrath)".

Tasos Stamou

Tasos Stamou, composer, improviser and music technologist, initially became widely known in the field of avant-garde experimental music, through the improvised, modified electronic instruments that he built and used. During his long stay in the United Kingdom (London), he began to tinker not only with electronics, but also with the local Greek musical traditions with which he grew up. He has released over twenty musical works on international independent labels (Discrepant UK, Ikuisuus FL, Moving Furniture NL, Coherent States GR, Orila GR, etc.) and has a number of live presentations internationally, both of his compositional and improvisational work. He has collaborated with a multitude of musical and sound explorers, such as Anna Homler, Mike Cooper, Magda Mayas, Valerio Tricoli, Savina Giannatou, Adam Bohman, Giannis Arapis, Thodoris Ziarkas, Nefeli Stamatogiannopoulou, etc. His "folkloric" work has been particularly positively received by international avant-garde sound media, such as The Wire, The Vinyl Factory, The Quietus, Soundohm, etc. He has also been featured in articles and radio specials that focus on the contemporary evolution of folklore in today's era.
